Florida is one of the best places on the planet to get consistent knee to waist high choppy surf.
After 5 – 10 years of that, you may want to go somewhere. Somewhere like Indonesia. Mechanical perfect waves rolling in every 10 – 20 minutes that reel off along a reef.
Indonesia is a long, long ways to travel from Florida. It takes two days of travel, roughly 24 hours in the air. So you are going to want to stay for more than a week.
Indonesia by Land:
Some of your best options are going to be with a reputable surf resort. We like Aura Surf Resort for the land based trips. They will help book your local flights, and once you get to the resort there are multiple wave options around the camp.
The all inclusive surf camps charge around $125 to $145 per night. So a 10 day trip would be in the ball park of $1,400 plus airfare. You want to check with the camps for their rates and like everywhere, there is a low season, high season and shoulder season, so plan ahead.
Indonesia by Boat
If you are thinking boat trip, you are probably looking at going to the Mentawais Islands. Waves like Greenbush, Bankvaults, Macaronis, Beng Beng, Bintangs, Burgerworld, Lance’s Left and Lance’s Right are household names in the surfing world. There are a lot of options, which means there is a lot of competition. Boat trip prices have actually fallen off over the years as more and more boats arrived in the region. Crowds at these spots have also increased an considerable amount. So don’t be shocked if there are 30 other surfers at these remote breaks.
The boat trips typically range from 10 to 12 nights and start at around $2,000 per person. As with most things, you get what you pay for, so be careful in selecting the most budget options.
One great benefit with the boat trips is not having to worry about mosquitoes and malaria as much.
By land or by sea, Indonesia is going to be an experience. The culture and foods are completely different from the western culture we have in Florida.
A note about malaria medicine. Make sure your doctor understand that you will be surfing, in the sun, and that you would like to sleep at night with out hallucinations. Some of the lower cost medicines have terrible side effects, so make sure you get the kind that does not cause sun sensitivity or nightmares.
