Amanda Stuffed Bear
Listen closely now please, and I'll tell you a tale,
not about an old boat, nor a fish, nor a whale,
but I'll tell you about a great bear, called a Panda,
who was made all of cotton, and whose name was Amanda.
One frosty spring morning not so long ago,
A farmer woke early, his field he must sow.
As the sun was just rising above the east hill,
he drove out on his tractor into the damp chill.
The morning was perfect for fishing or play,
but the farmer had a big job planned for that day.
The fields were all ready for planting his seeds,
forty acres for cotton and twenty for reeds.
Back and forth down the field his tractor would go,
throwing seeds high, and throwing seeds low.
By mid afternoon the sowing was done,
by early that evening the rains had begun.
A cold front passed over later that night,
the rain came down hard, the lightning flashed bright.
With a big flash bang boom, it struck near the shed,
and for a few seconds, glowed amber and red.
I don't know for sure what caused it that night,
the lightning, the thunder, or the strange light.
But something caused quite a mutation indeed,
and changed a plain cotton into Amanda Cottonseed.
Amanda had a purpose and she knew who she was,
not just some plain cotton, but special because,
she wasn't quite sure, but she knew it was there,
and she knew she would find it, with some help from a bear.
The summer was warm, and the cotton seeds sprouted,
but Amanda outgrew them all, so it's touted.
Her roots grew down deep and leaves stretched to the sky,
in less than six weeks she grew six feet high.
When Autumn approached and the harvest began,
a huge harvest machine controlled by one man,
through the cotton fields plowed, like a gigantic rake,
plucking cotton from stems into a big crate.
When it came to Amanda, a strange thing took place,
it ran over Amanda and left not a trace,
every cotton boll gathered, not one left behind,
and they all clung together, with a magical bind.
Amanda Cottonseed Cotton went in the same crate,
onto the same truck, into the same freight.
Explain how this happened, I could not begin,
but from off the same freight, it went to the same gin.
Amanda Cottonseed Cotton was combed, bleached, and trundled,
into a large bundle all her cotton was bundled.
This wasn't as bad as its sounds girls and boys,
for this bundle was sold to a maker of toys.
Spun into thread, into cloth, into fluffing,
Amanda Cottonseed Cotton was just fine for stuffing.
Some was died black and some was bleached white,
to make a stuffed bear, it came out just right.
Sewed, stretched, and fluffed, the stuffing then stuffed,
the eyes were sewn on, and the fur was then tufted.
Black and white on the outside, with fuzzy short hair,
Amanda Cottonseed Cotton became Amanda Stuffed Bear.
Amanda had a purpose and she knew what it was,
to become someone's friend, special because,
she wasn't yet sure, but she knew it would be,
sometime around Christmas with some help from a tree.
Stuffed into a box on a truck, then a train,
Amanda was shipped to a large toy store chain.
She was placed on a shelf with bears all around,
high up where she feared she wouldn't be found.
Amanda was lonely and cried every night,
sitting high on that shelf, all alone, without light.
The bears all around her were just plain stuffed toys,
but they soon were all taken by young girls and boys.
Then one day it happened, just as it should,
a small boy named Danny looked up as he stood,
in the aisle with his mother, he pointed, and said,
Mom, can I have that bear on the shelf by your head.
No way, said his mother, you can't have stuffed toys,
they're bad for your asthma, filled with alloys.
But later that day, she had not forgotten,
and returned to the store for that bear made of cotton.
She boxed it and wrapped it, and put it under the tree,
for in less than a week was Christmas to be.
In that box sat Amanda, still lonely and sad,
but Amanda knew soon she'd bring joy to some lad.
Then on Christmas morning with a rip and a tear,
Danny tore open that box filled with a bear,
he hugged it and squeezed it, and then with great care,
said, Mommy, I love it, my own Panda Bear.
That night after bedtime, it was quiet and still,
every one in bed sleeping soundly, until,
a slight ruffle near Danny, made him say, who is there ?
The response softly whispered, no one but your bear.
Danny spoke softly, can a bear really talk ?
The bear said, of course, but our secret, don't squawk.
My name is Amanda, I was made just for you,
your best friend I'll be, and your teddy bear to.
I was made for a purpose and I know what it was,
to become your best friend, special because,
I will be here beside you, I'll watch you all night,
I'll go with you in dreams and protect you from fright.
So Danny rolled over, slipping off in a dream,
and explored a great mountain and wild mountain stream,
then sailed cross the ocean with hardly a care,
just him and his teddy, Amanda Stuffed Bear.
