Green Captain Captain
Green Captain Captain the toy soldier
was young Tommy's favorite toy,
the leader of a twelve man squad
which Tommy would deploy,
around his fort up in his room
(which was really just a chair),
so they could do their special task -
protect Brown Stuffy Bear.
Set-up around his secret fort
in Tommy's own special way,
Green Captain Captain and his men
such courage would display,
as they repelled wave after wave
of an attacking outlaw band,
out-numbered sometimes ten to one they never lost a man.
Early one spring afternoon
on a pleasant sunny day,
Tommy took his soldier toys
out in the yard to play,
to the sandbox near the kitchen
so his Mom could keep an eye,
on Tommy and his soldier force
as they played beneath the sky.
But Tommy didn't notice
in the neighbor's yard next door,
grumpy Yellow Bad Cat
was sharpening his claw,
while watching Tommy and his toys
with an evil cat like stare,
grumpy Yellow Bad Cat
growled at Tommy's Stuffy Bear.
That evening after dinner
Tommy's Mom said get your bear,
I'll get him in a minute Mom
after I wash my hair,
but later Tommy saw a program
that he really liked to see,
and Tommy forgot to get his bear,
instead he watched TV.
Later on that fateful night
beneath the starlit skies,
a cat-like growl pierced the air
and lights like fire-flies,
lit up the yard behind the house
where Tommy's soldiers lay,
in the sandbox with that bear
they guarded every day.
In the morning after breakfast
early the next day,
Tommy recalled he left his toys
and ran outside to play,
but he couldn't find Green Captain Captain,
this day would not be fun,
cause in the sand where he should be
lay his helmet and his gun.
Tommy dug a shallow grave
beneath his favorite tree,
and buried Captain's helmet there
so all the world could see,
Green Captain Captain the toy soldier
was buried with a prayer,
he died doing what he liked to do -
protect Brown Stuffy Bear.
That night was quiet in the house
after Tommy went to sleep,
but a sound came from the toy box
as a rusted hinge might creep,
and a draft blew through the window
as sounds like little feet,
shuffled across the bedroom floor
as Tommy pulled up his sheet.
The next morning Tommy wakened
as the sun rose in the dawn,
he looked into his toy box
and saw some toys were gone,
Stuffy Bear and Captain's soldiers
were not where they should be,
so Tommy quickly ran outside
to the grave beneath the tree.
Beside Green Captain Captain's grave
his soldiers were all there,
lined up in perfect order
all around Brown Stuffy Bear,
and over in the neighbor's yard
Yellow Bad Cat nursed a sore,
and decided he would bother
Brown Stuffy Bear no more.
