Sand Dollar
Each evening as the summer day
fades in the western sky
the ocean wanders in once more
read on and you'll know why.
Crashing waves and bubbling foam
reclaim the seaside's sand
and wash away all signs of life
left on the beach by man.
First go the prints of tiny feet
and then sand castles tall
built by small children in the day
to the evening's waves they fall.
Up to the sandy sea side dune
as crabs scurry to and fro
the waves roll in, then out once more
as gentle breezes blow.
When golden rays announce the dawn
the ocean slips away
and leaves behind not a single trace
that there was a yesterday.
But get there early and you'll find
in the ocean's morning swell
a gift for you, left by the sea
a very special shell.
