Shasta the Osprey

High above the morning's mist

in the spring time skies

floating with the gentle breeze

he observes with sparkling eyes

and then without the slightest pause

he folds his wings away

and dives to snatch a spotted trout

from the shallow bay

Hidden beneath a Cyprus tree

with wonder on our face

we watch him fly off with his prize

high up to his tree top place

cause only several weeks ago

we found him in the sun

lying lifeless near the shore

wounded by some hunter's gun

My daughter said we had to help

such a noble bird

please let me take it home with me

those are the words I heard

and when the tears flowed from her eyes

what else could I say

that's how he came to be our friend

Shasta the Osprey

She whispered please don't be afraid

you will be better soon

and then we took him home that day

to bandage up his wound

she caught small fish most every morn

and fed that bird by hand

and nursed him with kind care and love

as only a young girl can

By the time spring plants began to peek

from beneath the winter's ground

Shasta was completely healed

and ready to be unbound

I told my daughter it was time

we must let Shasta go

but she cried with tear filled eyes

oh no, please daddy, NO!

I held her in my arms so close

and tried to tell her why

an Osprey belongs to the wild

if we keep him he will die

you must let Shasta fly away

you must set Shasta free

but every spring he will return

back to his Cyprus tree

Next morning as the sunlight's rays

lit up the eastern sky

we carried Shasta to the bay

to see if he could fly

my daughter said away please go

and tossed him towards the sea

and through the tears I heard her say

some day come back to me

Then through the morning's early mist

high in the spring time skies

floating with the gentle breeze

we watch him as he flies

when suddenly without a pause

he folds his wings away

and dives to snatch a spotted trout

from the shallow bay
